Cowan Sisters Carry Griffins to PSAC West Road Win

Seton Hill continued PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Edinboro looking to extend their winning streak to three games.

The Griffins were able to hold off a late Edinboro rally and used career highs from both Cowan sisters in an 83-77 win.  SHU has now won three in a row and is 12-6 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC.

Edinboro held an early 9-6 lead before back to back three pointers from Hallie Cowan gave the Griffins a 12-9 lead with 4:49 to play in the quarter.  That would be a lead the Griffins would not relinquish for the rest of the half.  The Griffins extended their lead to seven on two free throws from Helene Cowan and Joi Burleigh and a basket from Alie Seto.  Helene Cowan hit a three in the final minute of the quarter to put the Griffins in front 23-15.

The Scots hit two three pointers in the first half of the second quarter as they were able to keep the lead within eight points.  The Griffins then went on an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 42-27 on five points from Helene Cowan and three from Emma Fischer.  The Scots hit a free throw at the end of the half to trim the lead to 42-28 at the halftime break.

Seton Hill opened the second half with three free throws before back to back three pointers from the Scots trimmed the lead back to eleven at 45-34 with 7:38 to play.  The lead was still eleven with less than three minutes to play but the Griffins outscored the Scots 8-3 the rest of the quarter to take a 62-46 lead into the fourth quarter.  Hallie Cowan hit a three near the end of the quarter to extend the lead to sixteen.

A Courtney Tomas layin just under three minutes into the fourth quarter gave the Griffins their largest lead of the game to date at 21, 68-47.  Edinboro then went on a 13-0 run to trim the lead to eight before a Seto layup ended the run and put the Griffins back up ten, 70-60 with 3:31 left.  Two Helene Cowan free throws and a Hallie Cowan driving layup pushed the lead back to eleven with 2:39 left.  Seven straight from the Scots cut the lead to four but the Griffins were able to break the Scot press and get an easy layup from Sakeria Haralson to push the lead to 78-72 with 1:05 to play.

The Scots were not done as they answered with a three to trim the lead to 78-75 with 53 seconds left.  SHU missed two free throws but Seto got a steal and Helene Cowan hit both her free throws to push the lead back to 80-75 with 22 seconds left.  The Scots scored to cut the lead to three but Hallie Cowan hit one of two free throws and the Griffins got a defensive stop to close out the win.

The Griffins were led by the Cowan sisters, each scoring a career high in the win.  Helene Cowan scored a game high 22 points to lead SHU.  She was 11-11 from the free throw line.  Hallie Cowan added 21 points on four three pointers.  Seto finished with a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Seton Hill continues PSAC West play on Wednesday evening when they host Pitt Johnstown at 7:30 PM.
