Griffins Post Impressive 3-1 Win Over UPJ

Seton Hill trailed Pitt-Johnstown by a point in the PSAC West standings entering Saturday's match in Greensburg, but the Griffins vaulted past the Mountain Cats and into third place in the conference following a strong 3-1 victory.

After putting a pair of shots on net in the first eight minutes, the Griffins third shot put them in front. A foul call gave SHU a free kick and Mikayla Moyer delivered a ball that made it through to Madison Carr, who finished for her team-best fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 Seton Hill lead in the 13th minute.

Although it was the only goal of the first half, the Griffins peppered the Cats' goal through the half, launching 11 shots before halftime. Only seven saves from the UPJ keeper kept it a one-goal match at the break, while Grace Kenyon had a pair of saves for SHU in the opening half.

As much as Seton Hill controlled the first half, they really turned up the pressure to start the second half to seize control of the match. It took just 2:39 after halftime for the Griffins to strike. Emma Rain settled a ball down in the middle and gave a nice feed to Alexis Garia streaking down the left side. Her soft touch of a shot eluded the UPJ keeper and tucked just inside the right post for her second goal of the year and a 2-0 SHU lead.

The Griffins kept the pressure turned up over the next few minutes, keeping the ball deep in UPJ's end until they added another goal. Jessica Molitoris had possession in the midfield and played a ball into the box, where Corynna Rotoli was one-on-one with a defender. Rotoli used a great touch from her right foot to get the pass over the defender, gathered the loose ball and fired a strike from her left foot into the goal to swell the SHU lead to 3-0 in the 55th minute.

After the Griffins' string of dominance to start the second half, UPJ nearly swung the momentum back their way a few minutes later. The Cats managed to get a forward loose on a breakaway, but their attempt to get on the scoreboard was snuffed out by Kenyon, who made a great save to deny UPJ.

Although the visitors would manage to score on a rebound in the 66th minute, the Griffin defense clamped down from that point. The Mountain Cats managed just one more shot over the final 22 minutes of the match and that sailed high with seven seconds to play, as Seton Hill completed the 3-1 win to raise their record to 5-1-3 overall and 3-1-3 in the PSAC West.

The Griffins, who had a massive 26-7 margin in shots, had six different players record a point in the triumph. Goals came from Carr, Garia and Rotoli and assists were credited to Moyer, Rain and Molitoris. In net, Kenyon stopped four shots.

After this week's two-game home stand, Seton Hill goes back on the road for their next outing. They'll trek to IUP on Wednesday for a 4 pm match with the Crimson Hawks.
