Seton Hill struck for three first-half goals to build a solid lead and went on to post a 4-1 victory over visiting Cal Saturday in a PSAC West match.
The first half saw a flurry of action right from the start, as the Vulcans put a pair of shots on net in the opening 40 seconds and four shots total in the first three minutes. Griffin keeper
Nathaniel Huff stopped both attempts on goal and the others went wide. Then in the sixth minute, SHU grabbed the lead. A hard-struck shot by
Anton Dupont Linden from the left side of the box clipped off a defender in front of the goal and the ball found the back of the net. Linden's second goal of the season had the Griffins in front 1-0.
Seton Hill's second goal came a little past the midway point of the half. Following a Cal foul,
Archie Lock's free kick was on net. The original shot was saved, but the loose ball bounced to
Wilfred Munn, who headed in the rebound for his second of the year to increase the SHU lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute. In the 34th minute, Seton Hill 's third goal came after a beautiful two-man exchange. The Griffins were on the attack and
Fletcher Amos coming down the middle of the field gave a pass Linden on the right post. When the defense came toward Linden, he dropped a pass back to Amos, who rifled a shot into the net to give the home team a three-goal advantage they would carry into halftime.
The start of the second half saw a similar flurry of chances as the first from Cal. The Vulcans had four corners and four shots in the opening seven minutes of the half, but two of the shots were blocked by Griffin defenders and Huff made two more saves to keep Cal off the scoreboard. Seton Hill then settled the pace down back to their favor and it led to their final goal of match. This time it was
Joseph Spencer serving a ball into the box that
Sebastian Acuna finished for his first score of the season and a 4-0 Griffin advantage.
The Vulcans managed to finally score in the 77th minute, but it was their only tally of the match. Although Cal recorded a 17-11 advantage in shots, Huff made seven saves on the day, including five in the second half, as the Griffins cruised to the victory to raise their record to 2-6-1 and even their mark in the conference at 1-1-1. Linden finished the afternoon with one goal and one assist on the offensive end, while Acuna, Munn and Amos also posted goals. For Amos, it was his team-leading fourth of the year.
Seton Hill next match will be a non-conference tilt on the road, as they travel to Notre Dame (Ohio) College for a 4 pm kickoff on Wednesday.
