After the teams each scored a goal in the opening half, Seton Hill and Cal looked like their match Wednesday would finish in a tie, but
Alianna Resch scored with just over two minutes to play to lift the Griffins to a 2-1 over the Vulcans in PSAC West action.
Neither team had a shot through the opening 13 minutes and the first scoring attempt was converted by the Vulcans. A through ball played from midfield led to a Cal shot into the lower right corner of the goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.Â
The first shot for the Griffins (4-1-3, 2-1-3) came a few minutes later but their second shot in the 22nd minute evened the score.
Mikayla Moyer delivered a ball from the left side into the box that
Madison Carr gained control from a Cal defender. Carr took one touch and then sent a shot into the lower right corner of the goal as well to make it 1-1, which is where the score stood at halftime. Seton Hill had a 4-3 advantage in shots at the break and
Grace Kenyon made a pair of saves in the first 45 minutes.
There were chances for both teams to score through the second half. The Vulcans had a pair of attempts in the first seven minutes of the half, but one was blocked and Kenyon made a save on the other. Cal had another chance in the 68th minute when a shot attempt in the box was blocked and the Vulcans controlled the rebound, but Kenyon made the save to keep the match even.
Cal had six shots in the second half, but their final attempt was saved by Kenyon in the 79th minute. Over the final 11 minutes, it was the Griffins generating chances, as they had six shots over that stretch. One of those shots was deflected out by the Cal keeper with under three minutes to play, which led to a SHU corner kick. Off the corner, Seton Hill had a shot attempt that would have found the back of the net, but an intentional hand ball kept the ball out, which led to a red card on Cal and a SHU PK opportunity.
The PK attempt was saved by the Cal keeper, but Resch charged hard from the right side to collect the rebound and drilled a shot to the lower left corner of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:16 on the clock. The goal was the second of the year for Resch, while Carr's goal in the first half was her team-leading fourth of the season. Moyer recorded assists on both tallies, giving her a team-best four this year. Kenyon earned the win in net after making fives saves.
The Griffins, who were ranked ninth in the latest Regional rankings, will conclude their two-game home stand Saturday when they host Pitt-Johnstown in a 3:30 pm kickoff.
