Late Rally Comes Up Just Short at Mercyhurst

The Griffin women's soccer team made the trip up Interstate 79 to Erie for a PSAC West matchup with Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lakers scored the first three goals of the contest before the Griffins responded with two late goals in a 3-2 road loss.  SHU falls to 3-1-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the west while the Lakers improve to 4-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the west.

Neither team was able to score for the first thirty minutes of the first half.  The Lakers then scored twice in a four minute stretch to take a 2-0 lead over the Griffins.  Mercyhurst carried the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.  The Lakers held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the half.  Both teams had three corners.   Grace Kenyon made two saves in net for the Griffins.

Just over twenty minutes into the second half, the Lakers were able to extend their lead 3-0.  The Griffins then responded late with two goals.  Alianna Resch finished a Mikayla Moyer free kick to trim the lead to 3-1 with 6:48 to play in the contest.  Over four minutes later, Leah Policarpio intercepted a Laker pass and found Kathryn Penman in the box, Penman beat the Laker keeper to cut the lead to one goal with just over two minutes to play.

Kenyon finished with six saves in net for the Griffins.  Resch led the Griffins with two shots on goal.
