The Griffin women's soccer team made the trip up Interstate 79 to Erie for a PSAC West matchup with Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lakers scored the first three goals of the contest before the Griffins responded with two late goals in a 3-2 road loss. SHU falls to 3-1-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the west while the Lakers improve to 4-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the west. Â
Neither team was able to score for the first thirty minutes of the first half. The Lakers then scored twice in a four minute stretch to take a 2-0 lead over the Griffins. Mercyhurst carried the 2-0 lead into the halftime break. The Lakers held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the half. Both teams had three corners. Â
Grace Kenyon made two saves in net for the Griffins. Â
Just over twenty minutes into the second half, the Lakers were able to extend their lead 3-0. The Griffins then responded late with two goals.Â
Alianna Resch finished a
Mikayla Moyer free kick to trim the lead to 3-1 with 6:48 to play in the contest. Over four minutes later,
Leah Policarpio intercepted a Laker pass and found
Kathryn Penman in the box, Penman beat the Laker keeper to cut the lead to one goal with just over two minutes to play. Â
Kenyon finished with six saves in net for the Griffins. Resch led the Griffins with two shots on goal. Â
SHU will continue PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon when they head back to Erie to take on Gannon at 5 PM. Â
