The Griffin volleyball team opened their 2022 season with a pair of matches at the Davis & Elkins Top Hat Classic on Friday in Elkins, WV. Seton Hill opened the tournament with a matchup with Glenville State and closed out the day with a contest with Virginia State.
Seton Hill rallied from two sets to one down by winning sets four and five for a five set win over Glenville State in the opener. The Griffins then swept Virginia State in their second match of the day to improve to 2-0.
SHU came out strong taking the first set by a 25-20 score over Glenville State. The Pioneers rallied with a 25-15 second set win and a 25-22 third set win to take a 2-1 lead over the Griffins. SHU sent the match to five sets with a 25-23 win in the fourth set. The Griffins closed out the match with a 15-8 win in the fifth set.
Bobbi Rempe and
Paige Cole each had eight kills to lead the Griffins.
Mara Yahner and
Payton Rodberg each added seven kills.
Elizabeth Kolkowski finished with six kills.
Abby Oesterling led the offense with 20 assists.
Riley Rock finished with 13.
Carrie Leazer had a match high 23 digs. Rodberg added 15.
The Griffins closed out the day with a sweep of Virginia State. SHU took the first set by a 25-17 score. They won the second set, 25-14 and completed the sweep with a 25-16 win.
Cole led the Griffins with nine kills.
Mackenzie English, Yahner and Rodberg each added eight kills. Oesterling paced the offense with 14 assists while Rock added 12. Cole had a team leading 12 digs while Leazer added 11.
The Griffins will close out play in the Top Hat Classic on Saturday when they take on Elizabeth City State and host Davis & Elkins.
