Seton Hill hosted West Chester in the opening PSAC Tournament Semifinal Friday afternoon. The teams played through a driving rain through the game and the Golden Rams advanced to Sunday's Championship game after claiming a 17-8 triumph over the Griffins.
West Chester seized control in the early going, scoring four goals in the first 3:25 of the game. Seton Hill chipped two off the deficit with a pair of scores around the midway point of the quarter. The first goal was an unassisted tally by
Megan Bunker at 8:36 of the period and the second came just 44 seconds later when
Carleigh Sutfin scored off an assist from
Piper Conlan. The Rams would push the lead back to four goals with two more scores by the end of the period to build a 6-2 advantage.
Another early run of West Chester scores to open the second quarter, a four-goal outburst in a span of 3:48, extended the WCU margin to 10-2. The Griffins did counter with three of the final four goals of the period. The first came from
Grace Agnello and after a West Chester score, the final goals of the half were scored by Conlan and
Olivia McMahon and SHU was down 11-5 going into halftime.Â
The second half saw the scoring slow down, as West Chester outscored Seton Hill 3-1 in the third, with the lone goal for the Griffins coming from Conlan. The teams both scored twice in the final frame, with SHU getting scores from Conlan and
Hannah Thompson, but West Chester's 17-8 win advanced them to the title game to play East Stroudsburg, who defeated Mercyhurst in the other semifinal..
Agnello led Seton Hill with four points on the afternoon, including two goals and two assists. Conlan posted three points with a pair of goals and one assist and Sutfin had one goal and one assist. Others reaching the score sheet for the Griffins included Bunker, Thompson and McMahon with one goal each and
Jaclyn Frank with one assist.
On the defensive side, Bunker won nine draw controls and caused two turnovers, while Sutfin and
Makayla Kintner both scooped four ground balls.Â
The Griffins, who were ranked third in the most recent Atlantic Region rankings, will find out Sunday night if they've earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, which would mark the fourth in a row for the program.
