In their first meeting since the 2021 Atlantic Region Final, Seton Hill and Millersville traveled to Altoona, Pa., to play a non-conference game at PNG Field, home of the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Griffins used a stellar effort from their pitching staff and pieced together enough offense to pull out a 2-1 victory.
The pitchers controlled the action early, in particular Griffin starter
Ian Korn, who struck out five through the first two innings. Seton Hill (19-6-1) jumped on the scoreboard first when
Jake Orr led off the top of the third inning with a solo homer down the left-field line, the first long ball of his collegiate career. Korn struck out the first batter of the third inning for his sixth punch out of the contest, but the Marauders evened the score at 1-1 with a single and double in the last of the third.
The bats continued to be stymied on both sides through the middle part of the game. The Orr home run was the lone SHU hit through the first seven innings, although Seton Hill did get runners on base, drawing five walks. Korn threw the first three frames for the Griffins and was followed by
Marshall McGraw, who struck out one in a scoreless fourth inning, and
Jack Laird, who also had one K through a pair of scoreless innings.
Seton Hill finally managed to mount a threat in the top of the eighth inning when
Vincenzo Rauso singled with two outs and took third after
Jack Oberdorf blooped a single into right field. But a fly out ended the inning and the scoring chance for the Griffins. The SHU pitching staff continued to blank Millersville (22-7), as
Brian Pirone tossed a scoreless seventh inning and although the Marauders put two runners on in the eighth,
Caiden Wood ended that inning with a ground out to keep the tied at 1-1.
The Griffins managed to break the tie in ninth, as
Drew Garth opened the frame with a leadoff triple down the right-field line. Following a ground out against a drawn-in infield, pinch-hitter
Tanner Froehlich lofted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Garth and put Seton Hill back on top 2-1.
The Griffins turned the game over to closer
Nash Bryan in the ninth and he needed little time finishing things off. He retired the Marauders in order with a ground out, strike out and fly out to record his ninth save of the season. Wood's work in the eighth gave him the win, as he improved to 5-0 this year.
Seton Hill finished the afternoon with five hits, with Orr going 2-for-4 with a homer and a single, one RBI and one run scored. Garth's triple with the other extra-base hit in the game, while Rauso and Oberdorf also had singles.
The Griffins will return home for their next games, as they host Clarion in a twinbill Friday to open their weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
