Griffins Sweep Rock on Senior Day

On a day the Seton Hill softball program recognized its seniors during its doubleheader against Slippery Rock, a pair of senior Griffin pitchers made it a memorable day. After Morgan Ryan fired a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 win in game one, Lauren Bertig bettered that by spinning a one-hit shutout in the nightcap, won 1-0 by SHU in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The victories run the Griffins' winning streak to eight games and completes their regular season with a 35-8 record. In addition, their 12-4 mark in the PSAC West puts Seton Hill as the second seed for the Conference Tournament, which begins this coming Wednesday in Quakertown, Pa.

In the opening game, Seton Hill gave Ryan all the run support she would need in the first inning. Nichole McClendon hit a leadoff single, went to third on a single by Jenna Osikowicz and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan. The next run didn't come until the fourth when Morgan Toal hit a one-out single and came around to score on a triple by Brooklyn Fukushima to make it a 2-0 advantage.

Some clutch two-out hitting in the fifth inning allowed the Griffins to double their lead. Osikowicz stroked an RBI single and took second on an error before coming home on a double by Ryan for a 4-0 lead.

By that point in the game, Ryan was in cruise control in the circle. Slippery Rock had one hit in each of the first three innings, but managed just one base runner off an error in the final four frames. Ryan retired 15 of the last 16 batters she faced in the game and finished with the three-hit shutout while striking out nine and not walking a batter.

In between games of the twinbill, Seton Hill recognized their six seniors, including McClendon, Osikowicz, Bertig, Anna Klotz, Toal and Ryan. Feeding off that emotion, Bertig then locked up with Slippery Rock's Chloe Sharman in a classic pitcher's dual. The two hurlers were throwing dueling no-hitters through the first four innings of the contest. Bertig allowed a walk in the first and an error put another runner on in the second, but then she retired the next nine batters. On the other side, Sharman walked Osikowicz in the opening inning, but then set down 11 straight to take the scoreless battle to the fifth inning.

Bertig rolled through a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, but Seton Hill finally managed a hit in the bottom of the inning when Grace Paredes dropped a single into center field. The Griffins were unable to score in that inning and then a leadoff error by SHU in the sixth gave the Rock a base runner. Bertig recovered nicely to retire the next three batters on a sac bunt and two pop ups.

The game moved to the seventh still scoreless and Slippery Rock finally got their first hit on a sharply hit single down the left field line. However, the Rock runner took too wide a turn around first and would eventually be tagged out in a rundown for the first out. Bertig recorded the final two outs to set up a dramatic bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Fukushima singled and she went to second when Paredes singled off the pitcher's glove. Fukushima would race around for the winning run when Nina Grandey lofted an RBI single into right-center field to complete the sweep for the Griffins.

Bertig was the hero of the game for Seton Hill, as she fired the one-hit shutout while walking one and recording seven Ks.

Seton Hill will carry this momentum into the PSAC Tournament starting Wednesday. As the second seed in the West, the Griffins will open the conference playoffs against the third-seed in the East, Bloomsburg, Wednesday at 12:30 pm.
