Strong Wins 100th As Griffins Sweep IUP

The Griffins began their final weekend of the regular season with a road PSAC West doubleheader at Indiana (PA) on Friday afternoon.

SHU took game one by a 2-1 score before completing the sweep with a 3-2 win in game two.  The wins are the sixth in a row for the Griffins.  SHU is now 33-8 overall and 10-4 in the PSAC West.  IUP drops to 15-18 overall and 7-7 in the west.  The Griffins are currently one game behind first place California (PA) for first place with two games remaining for each team.  Gannon is third and has completed their schedule with a 10-6 record.  SHU will clinch the second seed in the west with one win on Saturday.  The Griffins would need to sweep Slippery Rock and have Edinboro sweep CalU for SHU to win the west.

The game one win was the 100th career win for Seton Hill head coach Jessica Strong.

Game one was a pitchers dual between the Griffins Morgan Ryan and IUP's Bella Bucy.  Both pitchers kept their opponents off the scoreboard for the first four innings.  SHU finally broke through in the fifth inning.  With two outs, Nichole McClendon doubled.  She scored when Jenna Osikowicz singled as SHU took a 1-0 lead.  Ryan followed with a single to score Osikowicz which put the Griffins in front 2-0.

IUP scored their lone run of the game in the sixth inning.  They used a single, ground out and single to trim the SHU lead to 2-1.

Ryan won her 14th game of the season with another complete game.  She allowed five hits while striking out eight.

McClendon, Osikowicz and Ryan each had two hits for the Griffins.

In game two, the Griffins took an early lead in the top of the second inning.  Brooklyn Fukushima drew a leadoff walk.  She advanced to second on a bunt from Grace Paredes and then moved to third on a passed ball.  Fukushima scored when Nina Grandey reached on a bunt base hit and SHU led 1-0.

The Crimson Hawks tied the game at one in the bottom half of the inning.  They used a triple and a sacrifice bunt to tie the score at one.

SHU retook the lead in the fifth.  McClendon led off the inning with a single.  Osikowicz followed with a single.  After a lineout, Morgan Toal doubled to knock in Osikowicz to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead.  Fukushima followed with an RBI single, scoring Toal and putting the Griffins in front 3-1.

IUP scored their final run of the game with a solo homer in the sixth.

Chloe Elliott earned her tenth win of the season with a complete game effort.  She struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

Osikowicz and Toal each had two hits.

SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock on Senior Day.  First pitch is set for 1 PM.
