Griffins Split at Mercyhurst

Seton Hill began an important PSAC West and Atlantic Regional four game set with a road doubleheader in Erie against Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon.

Mercyhurst hit eight home runs as they defeated the Griffins by a 14-2 margin in game one.  SHU responded with a 5-0 shutout win in game two to earn the split of the doubleheader.  SHU is now 27-15-1 overall and 11-11 in the PSAC West while the Lakers are 27-12 overall and 14-8 in the west.

The Griffins took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Braden Durham opened the inning by reaching on an infield single.  Owen Sabol then homered to left center field to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

The Lakers responded with a two run shot in their half of the second inning to tie the score at two.  They added another two run homer in the third inning as they increased their lead to 4-2.

Mercyhurst broke the game open with five homers in the fourth inning.  They scored nine runs as they built a 13-2 lead.  The Lakers added a solo homer in the fifth inning for the 14-2 lead.

Jack Oberdorf had two hits for the Griffins in game one.

SHU again took an early lead in game two.  Oberdorf drew a one out walk and stole second.  After a ground out, Vincenzo Rauso singled to knock in Oberdorf and give SHU a 1-0 lead.

The Griffins added another run in the second inning.  Sabol led off the inning with a double.  Isaiah DiAndreth singled to put runners on first and third.  Drew Garth picked up an RBI on a groundout which scored Sabol to make it 2-0.

Doubles from Max Mandler and Neal McDermott extended the Griffins lead to 3-0 in the third inning.

Seton Hill added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning.  Garth singled to lead off the inning.  He moved to second when Brandon Kline reached on an error on a bunt.  Oberdorf was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  McDermott then reached on an error, allowing two runs to score and give SHU a 5-0 lead.

Andino Vecchiolla went 4.1 innings to pick up the win.  He gave up four hits and struck out seven.  Nash Bryan worked the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.  He allowed just one hit and struck out five.
