Softball Sweeps Clarion

The Griffin softball team continued PSAC West play with a home doubleheader against Clarion on Friday afternoon in Greensburg.

Seton Hill jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one in route to a 5-3 win.  SHU completed the sweep of Clarion with a 2-0 win in game two.  The Griffins improve to 29-8 overall and 6-4 in the west.

SHU scored four times in the bottom of the first inning of game one.  Nichole McClendon and Jenna Osikowicz walked to start the game.  After a pop out, Morgan Toal drove a ball to deep left center field for a three run blast to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead.  Back to back doubles from Brooklyn Fukushima and Grace Paredes extended the SHU lead to 4-0.

Clarion got a single run in the top of the fourth inning to trim the lead to 4-1.  They added two more runs in the fifth inning on a two out, two RBI double.

SHU got a run back in the bottom half of the inning.  Osikowicz tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a Morgan Ryan groundout.

Ryan earned her 12th win of the season with another complete game.  She gave up two earned runs on three hits while striking out seven.  Toal led the Griffins with two hits and three RBIs.

The starting pitchers in game two, SHU's Chloe Elliott and Clarion's Kendyl Switzer were able to keep their opponents off the scoreboard over the first three innings.

SHU finally broke through in the fourth inning.  Osikowicz singled to lead off the inning and Lauren Dellett walked to put runners on first and second.  Toal moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt.  Fukushima then executed a squeeze play with Osikowicz beating the throw to the plate to give SHU a 1-0 lead.

The Griffins added an insurance run in the fifth.  Bre Athey tripled to lead off the inning.  She was out when Mackenzie Zang reached on a fielders choice.  Alexis Bonatch pinch ran for Zang.  Bonatch stole second and moved to third on a McClendon single.  Osikowicz then singled to score Bonatch and give SHU a 2-0 lead.

Elliott improved to 8-3 on the season with a complete game shutout.  She allowed four hits while striking nine.  Osikowicz had two hits.

SHU will next take on UPJ on Saturday in Greensburg.  SHU will be the road team in both contests.
