Griffins Drop Two at Cal

Seton Hill traveled to Cal Saturday to open PSAC West action and the Vulcans were able to limit the Griffins to two runs in the doubleheader in taking 6-1 and 5-1 victories.

In game one, the teams were scoreless through two innings, but Cal struck for four runs in the bottom of the third with only one hit, as two hit batters and two errors aided the Vulcan cause. Seton Hill got a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Nina Grandey singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Grace Paredes to cut the Cal lead to 4-1. But the Vulcans answered back with a pair of runs in the last of the fourth innings, as two walks came back to haunt the Griffins when both of those runners scored on a two-out double.

Seton Hill managed to outhit Cal in the game 7-5, but three errors and six walks were too much to overcome. Grandey and Jenna Osikowicz hit two singles each in the game, while Paredes drove home one. Starter Morgan Ryan went four innings in the circle and struck out four in the setback.

The Griffins threatened early in game two, but stranded two runners in the opening inning and one more in the second. Then in the bottom of the second, Cal took the lead with a two-run homer and two-out RBI double. The Griffins continued to get runners on base but just couldn't find a timely hit, as they stranded two runners in the fourth and one in the fifth and sixth innings. The Vulcans would add to their lead with solo runs in the fourth and fifth frames and carried aa 5-0 advantage into the final inning.

In that inning, SHU threatened for a big comeback. Paredes hit a leadoff single and after an error on a fielder's choice, Nichole McClendon singled to load the bases. That was followed by an Osikowicz RBI single to make it 5-1 and the Griffins brought the tying run to the plate with no outs. But the Vulcans stymied the comeback attempt, as a strikeout, fly out and ground out to second ended the game without another run crossing and Cal came away with the 5-1 win.

Seton Hill managed six hits in the second game, matching Cal's hits. The major difference was five of Cal's six hits went for extra bases. Osikowicz had another two-hit effort with a pair of singles and drove in a run as well. In the circle, Chloe Elliott started and allowed four runs while striking out a pair. Lauren Dellett threw the final three innings and totaled three strikeouts while giving up one run.

The Griffins get the chance to nounce back quickly from today, as they return to the diamond tomorrow with a road doubleheader at Shepherd beginning at 1 pm
