Softball Runs Season Opening Winning Streak to Eight

Seton Hill continued play in the Spring Games in Florida with a pair of games on Monday.  SHU took on WV Wesleyan to open the day then closed out the day with a matchup with Notre Dame (OH).  

The Griffins defeated WV Wesleyan by a 4-2 score then defeated Notre Dame (OH) to run their season opening winning streak to eight games.  

SHU scored first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning against WV Wesleyan.  Natalie Greco walked to lead off the inning.  After an out, Nichole McClendon reached on an error.  One out later, Brooke Cleland made the Bobcats pay for the error by launching a homer to give SHU a 3-0 lead.  

Wesleyan responded with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Griffins lead to 3-2.  The Griffins got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning.  McClendon singled and moved to third on a Jenna Osikowicz double.  Cleland then made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly.

Logan Hartman earned her first win of the season, going 4.1 innings to start the game.  She allowed just two unearned runs on four hits.  Morgan Ryan worked the final 2.2 to earn a save.  She allowed just one hit while striking out four.  Cleland drove in all four runs for the Griffins.  

SHU took a 1-0 lead over NDC in the third inning of game two.  Mackenzie Zang drew walk with one out.  She moved to second on a McClendon sacrifice bunt and scored on an Osikowicz single.  

Notre Dame tied the game at one with an unearned run in the top of the fourth.  SHU struck with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.  Brooklyn Fukushima and Grace Paredes singled with two outs.  Fukushima scored when pinch hitter Alex Walsh doubled to make it 2-1.  

Cleland increased the lead to 3-1 when she drove in McClendon who singled and stole second base.  Zang added an RBI single in the sixth for an insurance run.

Morgan Toal and Paredes each had two hits.  Chloe Elliott earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief.  Lauren Dellett picked up the save working the seventh inning.

SHU will continue play in Winter Haven on Tuesday when they meet St Cloud State and Southern New Hampshire.
