Baseball Opens Florida Trip with Win

Seton Hill began their 2022 spring trip with a matchup with Winona State at the NE Regional Complex in Davenport, Florida.

The Griffins used two Max Mandler home runs to defeat Winona State by a 3-1 score.  SHU is now 5-1 on the season.

Winona State threatened in the bottom of the first but a relay from Drew Garth to Max Mandler to Vincenzo Rauso got the second out of the inning at the plate.

The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Max Mandler hit a solo shot to right field to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

Seton Hill put two runners on in the fifth with singles from Mandler and Braden Durham but Mandler was thrown out at the plate on a fly out to left to end the inning.

Winona State tied the game at one in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

The Griffins took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh.  Drew Garth singled to lead off the inning.  Pinch runner Neal McDermott moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tanner Froehlich.  Mandler singled to put runners on first and third and Brandon Kline walked to load the bases.  Owen Sabol then drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run.

Mandler's second homer of the game, a no doubter, gave SHU a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth.

Mandler went 4-4 in the win with two solo homers.  Durham added two hits in the win.

Brian Pirone with a scoreless sixth inning to earn the win.  Nash Bryan with a scoreless 1.1 innings to earn his third save.  Both struck out three hitters.
