Game Recap: Baseball |

Shutout Highlights Griffin Sweep

Seton Hill opened a three-game weekend series with LeMoyne Friday, as the schedule was adjusted to make Friday a doubleheader instead of the original single game. The opening game saw southpaw starter Kevin Vaupel fire a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win and in game two, the Griffins rallied from a 5-1 deficit post a 9-6 triumph to secure a sweep.

The first game was a true pitcher's dual between Vaupel and LeMoyne's Max Parker. After two scoreless innings, the Dolphins had their best chance of the game in the third inning when they loaded the bases with one out. But Vaupel escaped the jam with a pair of Ks. Seton Hill used the momentum from that to strike for the first run in the last of the third. With two outs, Owen Sabol laced a double and he scored when Vincenzo Rauso hit an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

After extinguishing LeMoyne's best chance in the third, Vaupel went on cruise control. He allowed just one more hit over the final four innings, a one-out single in the fifth inning. Parker kept his team in the game, as SHU's lead was still just a run going into the sixth. The Griffins tacked on an insurance run in the frame when Jack Oberdorf cracked a ground-rule double that bounced over the fence in right and with two outs, Neal McDermott dropped a single into center field for a 2-0 Seton Hill lead.

Vaupel wouldn't need the extra run, as he retired the Dolphins in order in the seventh inning to set down the final eight batters he faced in the victory. He allowed four hits, all singles, and walked only one while striking out eight batters to improve his record to 2-0 for the year. The offense managed seven hits in the game, with two off the bat of Oberdorf.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins offense immediately tried to make up for the first game by scoring three runs in the first inning. Seton Hill got one back in the bottom of the first on a sac fly from Isaiah DiAndreth, but the LeMoyne lead grew to 5-1 in the third inning after a two-run homer. The Griffins immediately went to work on the deficit in the third inning with two runs, as Sabol and Braden Durham pulled off a double steal, with Durham swiping home. Oberdorf then delivered an RBI single to score Sabol and it was a 5-3 margin.

In the fourth, SHU loaded the bases and Durham hit into a fielder's choice, beating the throw to first. Neal McDermott scored from third and Drew Garth never stopped running from second, racing all the way around to score the tying run to even the count at 5-5.

Seton Hill took the lead for good in the fifth inning when DiAndreth hit an RBI triple, Nate Dorinsky knocked him in with a double and McDermott drove home Dorinsky with a single. In the sixth inning, the Griffins scored their eighth straight run on an Oberdorf RBI single.

The LeMoyne bats went silent starting in the fifth inning when Caiden Wood entered for Seton Hill in relief and he threw three and a third scoreless innings. The Dolphins finally mounted a threat in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs and got a run home with a walk. Seton Hill turned to closer Nash Bryan, who slammed the door shut with a K and a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and give SHU the sweep. Wood picked up the win with his strong relief work to go to 2-0 this year and Bryan earned his fifth save.

Seton Hill posted 15 hits in the victory with DiAndreth going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Durham had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Sabol collected a pair of hits and scored twice as well.

The final game of the series will be played Saturday with first pitch now scheduled to be thrown at 2 pm.
