Seton Hill continued its non-conference schedule Thursday when Alderson-Broaddus came to Greensburg for a pair of games. After nine Griffins had hits in an 11-1 win in the first game that was stopped after five innings, eight different Seton Hill players collected hits in a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap, which ran SHU's winning streak to five straight.
The Griffins (13-2) took the lead right away with four runs in the opening inning when
Brooke Cleland hit a two-run single,
Brooklyn Fukushima drove in one with a single and a wild pitch brought home the fourth run. Three more scored in the second inning for SHU, including an RBI double by
Nichole McClendon, a sac fly by
Jenna Osikowicz and a
Morgan Toal RBI single, to increase the lead to 7-0.
Seton Hill added a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to put the game in position to end early. After an error following a single by
Anna Klotz allowed the initial run of the third frame to come home,
Grace Paredes singled home the second run. In the fourth inning,
Bre Athey stepped in to pinch-hit and bashed a two-run homer to deep left for an 11-0 SHU margin.
Soaking in all the offensive support in the circle was
Lauren Dellett. She started and threw four scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 1-0 this year, as she allowed just two hits and struck out four. Seton Hill pounded out 12 hits in the triumph from nine different hitters. McClendon, Toal and Paredes had two each, while Cleland and Athey both drove in two and McClendon crossed home twice.
Game two saw another quick start from the Griffins at the plate. With two outs and the bases loaded in the first inning, an error on a pop up allowed the first two runs to touch home. That was followed by an RBI bunt single by
Natalia Greco to make it a 3-0 advantage. The lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth inning when McClendon tagged a two-run double to left.
The Battlers (5-9) started making a comeback in the fifth inning. SHU starter
Logan Hartman began the game with four scoreless innings, but AB finally managed a pair of runs in the fifth and made it a 5-3 game with one in the sixth inning.
The comeback hopes ended there for the Battlers, as the Griffin bats delivered two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth behind an RBI triple by Osikowicz and she scored when
Morgan Ryan belted an RBI double to deep center.
In the seventh, Griffin reliever
Chloe Elliott finished the win off. She earned the save after throwing two scoreless innings and only allowing one walk while striking out one. Hartman picked up the victory to improve to 3-0, as she struck out three and allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings worked.
It was another balanced game at the plate for the Griffins, with Ryan collecting two hits and seven others posting one apiece. McClendon had two RBIs and Osikowicz scored twice.
Seton Hill returns to action tomorrow when they host a round robin with Mercyhurst and Malone. Those two schools will square off in a 12 pm match-up, which will be followed by the Griffins taking on Mercyhurst at 2 pm. The final game of the day will feature Seton Hill and Malone at 4 pm
