Griffins Sweep West Liberty in Home Opening Doubleheader

Seton Hill played their home opener on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted West Liberty in a non conference doubleheader.

Seton Hill used the bat of Morgan Toal and the arm of Morgan Ryan for a 1-0 win in game one.  The Griffins then used a three run walk off bomb from Brooke Cleland for an 8-5 win in game two to complete the sweep.  SHU improves to 5-0 on the season.

The Griffins Morgan Ryan and Hilltoppers Mackenzie Amend hooked up in a pitchers dual as both hurlers kept their opponents off the board over the first three innings.

Morgan Toal gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Toal lined a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall to put the Griffins in front.

Ryan improved to 2-0 on the season with the complete game effort.  She struck out 13 while allowing just four hits.

Natalia Greco put the Griffins in front with a solo homer to right center field on an 0-1 pitch to put the Griffins in front 1-0 in the second inning of game two.  The Griffins went on to add four more runs in the inning.  Bre Athey scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.  Lauren Dellett doubled to the right center to score Nichole McClendon and then Toal launched a two run shot to left field to make it 5-0.

West Liberty answered back with three runs in their half of the third inning to cut the SHU lead to 5-3.  They tied the score at five with a two run homer in the top of the fourth inning.

The game remained tied at five until the eighth inning.  Under the international tiebreaker, Chloe Elliott was able to strand a runner at third and keep the score tied.  In the Griffins half, Alexis Bonatch was placed on second and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Toal was walked and stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs.  After an out, Cleland launched an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for the walk off win.

Elliott earned the win with three perfect innings of relief.  She struck out five hitters.

SHU will return to action this weekend as part of their spring trip in Florida.
