Seton Hill and #25 Gannon met on Saturday afternoon in Erie in a battle for the top spot in the PSAC Western Division standings.
The Griffins outscored Gannon 32-22 in the second half, including a 17-9 advantage in the fourth quarter, in route to a 61-52 victory over the Golden Knights. SHU improves to 18-7 overall and 12-4 in PSAC play while Gannon drops to 16-4 overall and 11-4 in PSAC play. SHU leads the PSAC West standings with the 12-4 record. Gannon is second with the 11-4 record. Both CalU and IUP each have nine wins in the PSAC.
Back to back baskets to open the contest from
Katie Nolan gave the Griffins an early 4-0 advantage. Gannon responded with seven straight to take a 7-4 lead. It did not take the Griffins long to retake the lead as they scored points in 22 seconds to retake a 12-7 lead.
Sonia Sarda scored five of the points in the run and Nolan added the other three. Nolan and
Madelyn Fischer scored the final four points of the quarter as the Griffins took a 16-10 lead.
Cheyenne Trest opened the second quarter with a layup as the Griffins extended their lead to eight. After four straight from the Knights,
Kelly Weeks drained a three to push the SHU advantage to 21-14 with 6:51 remaining in the half. Gannon closed the half on a 16-8 run as they took a 30-29 lead.
The Golden Knights scored the first six points of the third quarter as they built their lead to 36-29 three minutes into the half. Seton Hill responded with a 10-0 run over a four and a half minute stretch as they took a 39-36 lead. Trest had half of the Griffin points in the run. Late in the quarter,
Samantha Kosmacki hit a three to put the Griffins in front 44-40 but Gannon hit a three to cut the SHU lead to 44-43 after three quarters of play.
Seton Hill then turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, holding the Golden Knights to just 2-11 from the floor in the quarter. The teams exchanged leads over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and the score was tied at 52 midway through the quarter. SHU kept the Golden Knights off the scoreboard over the final 5:50 of the quarter as they closed the quarter on a 9-0 run.
Christiane Frye broke the tie with a three pointer with 4:40 to play.
Courtney Tomas added a bucket and Nolan scored the final four points of the game for the Griffins.
Seton Hill held Gannon to just 33% shooting from the floor in the game. The Knights were just 4-21 from three point land. SHU also forced 13 Gannon turnovers. The Griffins also had a 49-37 advantage in rebounds.
Nolan led SHU with her 13th double double of the season. She finished with game high 24 points and 17 rebounds. Trest also reached double figures with 11 points. Sarda and Frye each tossed in seven points.
SHU will continue PSAC West play on Monday evening with a make up contest at Slippery Rock.
