The Griffin women's lacrosse team opened their 2022 season with a home matchup with PSAC East foe Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon.
Seton Hill used a huge third quarter to take control of the game and outscored the Raiders 10-5 in the second half in route to a 15-9 win. The Griffins are now 1-0 on the season while Ship drops to 1-1 on the season.
The first quarter belonged to the Griffins as they were able to build a 4-0 lead.
Carleigh Sutfin got the Griffins on the board just 26 seconds into the contest.
Hannah Thompson and
Jaclyn Frank scored two minutes apart as the Griffins extended their lead to 3-0 with 9:17 to play in the quarter.
Piper Conlan made it 4-0 with a goal with 5:59 to play in the quarter.
Shippensburg scored the first two goals of the second period to cut the Griffins lead in half. Conlan scored her second of the day to increase the SHU lead to 5-2 with 3:33 to play before the half. The Raiders then scored the final two goals of the half to trim the SHU lead to 5-4 at the half.
Just over two minutes into the third quarter, the Raiders tied the contest at five. SHU responded with goals from Frank and Conlan as they took a 7-5 lead with 9:52 to play in the quarter. SHU would not give up the lead the rest of the contest. Just over a minute later, Ship scored to trim the lead to one but the Griffins scored the final five goals of the period to take a 12-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Skylar Orlowski and
Alaina TeSelle each scored once during the 5-0 run.
TeSelle and Orlowski scored goals in the first minute of the fourth quarter as SHU built their lead to 14-6.
Kara Gosnell closed out the scoring for the Griffins with a goal with 6:17 to play in the contest.
Conlan led the Griffins with a seven point performance. She scored four times and added three assists. Frank finished with four goals and one assist. Sutfin scored twice and added an assist while Orlowski and TeSelle each added two goals.
Megan Bunker dominated the draws, finishing with 19 draw controls. She also added two assists. Frank and Bunker each added three caused turnovers.
Kamille Ward recorded three saves in three quarters of action to earn the win.
Seton Hill will travel to Walsh for a non conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
