Griffins Drop Key PSAC West Matchup at IUP

Seton Hill continued PSAC West play on Saturday evening with an important PSAC West and Atlantic Regional contest at the KCAC against Indiana (PA).  

Seton Hill led 54-50 with just under five minutes to play in the contest but the Crimson Hawks scored the final eight points of the contest for a 58-54 victory over the Griffins.  SHU falls to 20-9 overall and 14-6 in PSAC play while IUP improves to 19-7 overall and 13-7 in the PSAC.

The Griffins drop into third place in the PSAC West standings behind Gannon who has 16 wins and CalU who has 14 wins but owns the tiebreaker over the Griffins with two head to head wins.  IUP is just behind CalU and the Griffins with 13 wins.  

The first four field goals of the game were three pointers, two by each team.  Five straight from the Crimson Hawks gave them an 11-6 lead midway through the quarter.  They built their lead to 13-7 before Cheyenne Trest hit a three to cut the lead to 13-10 with 3:38 to play.  The Griffins then closed the quarter on a 6-0 run as they took an 18-17 lead.  Sonia Sarda made a layup, Christiane Frye added two free throws and Teresa Haigh ended the quarter with a basket.  

Samantha Kosmacki and Rena Enterline each hit three pointers in the first two minutes of the second quarter as the Griffins extended their lead to 24-19 less than two minutes into the quarter.  IUP responded with a 16-6 run to end the quarter and took a 35-30 lead into the halftime break.  

IUP pushed their lead to nine points as they scored the first four points of the third quarter.  Trest ended the little run with a three pointer.  Sarda hit a three pointer near the end of the quarter as SHU cut the IUP lead to 45-42.  

Katie Nolan connected on one of two free throws and Sarda hit another three as SHU took a 46-45 lead less than a minute into the fourth.  Kosmacki gave SHU a 52-50 lead with a three pointer with 5:49 to play.  Nolan pushed the SHU advantage to four with a basket with 4:33 to play.  IUP then closed the game by scoring the final eight points for the win.

Trest led the Griffins with 15 points.  Sarda, Nolan and Kosmacki each reached ten points in the loss.

The Griffins will close out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Wednesday evening when they host UPJ.
