Fourth Quarter Costly in Home Loss to UPJ

Seton Hill hosted Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday evening in the regular season home finale for the Griffins.

UPJ was able to turn around a seven point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter into a seven point win over the Griffins with a 24-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.  UPJ defeated the Griffins by a 70-63 score.  With the loss, the Griffins fall to 20-10 overall and 14-7 in the PSAC while UPJ improves to 12-15 overall and 10-11 in the PSAC.

With the loss on Wednesday evening, the Griffins will now host the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Monday evening at 6 PM as either the three or four seed from the west.

Pitt Johnstown jumped out to an early 11-5 lead behind three three pointers in the first four minutes of the contest.  The Mountain Cats built their lead to 19-10 with 2:21 to play in the quarter.  This is where the Griffins began their comeback.  SHU then went on a 13-0 run over a four minute stretch to take the lead.  The Griffins closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run.  Christiane Frye and Courtney Tomas got baskets on back to back possessions to start the run. Katie Nolan added two free throws and Teresa Haigh scored the final bucket of the quarter as the Griffins trailed by one, 19-18, at the end of the quarter.

Frye opened the second quarter scoring and Nolan added three more points as SHU took a 23-19 lead with 8:32 left in the half.  After a three point play from UPJ, Kelly Weeks hit a three and Nolan added another bucket to give SHU a 28-22 lead with 5:55 to play in the half.  UPJ got to back within two late in the half but the Griffins closed the quarter on a 6-0 run as they took a 35-27 lead into the halftime break.

After a UPJ basket to open the half, Nolan completed a three point play to give SHU a 38-29 lead early in the quarter.  A three from Tomas and a layin from Frye along with another Nolan basket gave the Griffins their biggest lead of the game at 12, 47-35, with 5:54 to play.  UPJ cut that lead to six before four straight points from Sonia Sarda pushed the advantage back to ten.  UPJ hit a late three to cut the lead to 53-46 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Mountain Cats trimmed the lead to four early in the quarter but baskets from Nolan and Frye extended the SHU lead back to 59-51 with 6:43 to play.  Over the final 6:43, the Mountain Cats would outscore the Griffins 19-4 to steal the win.  The Griffins just hit four free throws over the final minutes.

Nolan led the Griffins with another double double of 23 points and 12 rebounds.  Frye was the only other Griffin in double figures with 12 points.  Kosmacki finished with eight.

SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Edinboro.
