Seton Hill played its second straight home game Wednesday night when they hosted Cal U and despite 20 points from
Ryan Meis and double-doubles from
Jimmy Moon and
Sean Dillon, the Vulcans came away with a 70-58 victory over the Griffins.
Cal knocked down a pair of threes to open the game and scored the first nine points of the contest, but Seton Hill countered with nine of the next 14 points, capped off by treys from Dillon and Meis. The Vulcans' lead grew to as large as 28-15 following the under-eight media timeout, but again, the Griffins responded. Lay-ups by
Samuel Tabe, Dillon and Moon sliced the lead down to seven and the Cal lead was cut to 34-27 at the intermission when Tabe had a steal and lay-in to beat the halftime horn.
The Griffins kept the momentum to start the second half. Consecutive buckets by Meis brought SHU within three early in the period, which was answered by a Cal three-pointer. After a couple empty possessions from both sides, Moon stepped back to drain one from behind the arc and Seton Hill was within three again at 43-40 with 14 minutes to play.
Unfortunately, that's when the Griffins went cold from the floor and the Vulcans took advantage. Cal used a 17-2 run over the ensuing six minutes, with all their points coming in the paint over that span, to build a 60-42 advantage. The Griffins offense got back on track, as Moon and
Miles Monchecourt scored five each in a 12-4 surge that brought SHU within 10 at 64-54 with under two minutes remaining, but the Griffins were unable to get any closer. Cal secured the win by making 6-of-8 from the foul line in the final 74 seconds.
Meis posted a strong game on the night for the Griffins. He scored 20 points, his fourth game this season with 20+, and also handed out four assists. Moon finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, while Dillon had 10 points and a career-high 13 boards for his second double-double of the year. Tabe rounded out the top scorers with 10 markers in the game.
The Griffins head out on the road for their next game, as they travel to face nationally-ranked IUP Saturday in a 7:30 pm tip-off.
