Women's Basketball Ends 2022 With Loss

The Griffins returned to action after the Christmas break with a PSAC Crossover matchup at West Chester on Friday afternoon.
 
West Chester used a pair of 11-0 runs in the first half to pull away from the Griffins in a 90-72 victory.  SHU falls to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC while the Golden Rams improve to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC. 
 
SHU got off to a quick start as they took an early 5-0 lead less than a minute into the contest.  Helene Cowan hit a three to open the contest and Courtney Tomas added a field goal in the first minute of the contest.  West Chester hit two free throws to cut the lead to 5-2 before a Christiane Frye jumper gave SHU a 7-2 lead with 8:26 to play.  The Griffins would then go scoreless for the next five minutes as West Chester built a 13-7 lead.  Alie Seto hit a three pointer to end the scoreless run for SHU and trim the lead to 13-10.  West Chester led 17-12 after one quarter of play.
 
West Chester opened the second half with five straight points, forcing a Griffin timeout.  The run continued as West Chester scored the first 11 points of the quarter and extended their lead to 28-12 with 7:43 to play in the half.  The Griffins responded with six straight points, four by Frye to cut the lead to 28-17.  A three from Seto and a jumper from Frye trimmed the lead to 31-22 with 5:47 to play.  West Chester was able to extend their lead to 46-33 at the half. 
 
Back to back layups from Sakeria Haralson and Helene Cowan made it 49-37 with 6:26 to play in the third quarter.  West Chester responded with a 12-0 run as they extended their lead to 24 points with just under three minutes left in the quarter. 
 
The Golden Rams were able to extend their lead to as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter, a quarter the Griffins outscored the Rams 28-23 in. 
 
Seto and Frye tied for game high honors with 18 points each.  Frye finished with five assists while Seto pulled down six rebounds. 
 
The Griffins will travel to Indiana (PA) on Wednesday evening as they open PSAC West play.
