The Griffin women's basketball team began play in Puerto Rico in the Porta Del Sol Shootout with a matchup with the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Sunday afternoon.
SHU was able to open the trip with a 74-53 victory as the Griffins used a big fourth quarter to pull away for the win. SHU is now 6-3 on the season. Â
Seton Hill fell behind 6-2 in the early going before back to back buckets from Hallie and
Helene Cowan tied the score at six with 7:22 to play in the quarter. With SHU trailing 8-6, the Griffins scored 13 straight points over a five minute stretch to take a 19-8 lead.Â
Joi Burleigh opened the run with a basket before the Griffins got three three pointers from Hallie and
Helene Cowan and
Maddy Moore to take a 17-8 lead.Â
Helene Cowan ended the run with two free throws. SHU led 19-12 after one quarter of play. Â
Burleigh opened the second quarter with a free throw and Moore added a bucket before
Courtney Tomas hit a three as SHU extended their lead to 25-13 early in the quarter. SHU was able to extend its lead to as many as 18 in the quarter before settling for a 36-20 halftime lead. Â
Midway through the third quarter, the Griffins led 46-33 on an
Helene Cowan basket. Mayaguez responded with a 9-0 run to cut SHU's lead to 46-42 with 1:06 to play.Â
Alie Seto hit a three pointer to end the run and she followed that with a layup as SHU carried a 51-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Â
In the fourth quarter, the Griffins were able to pull away as they increased their lead to as many as 22 points.
Helene Cowan led the Griffins with 16 points. She added six assists. Both
Hallie Cowan and Seto each scored 15 points. Â
The Griffins forced 19 turnovers while winning the rebounding battle 42-31. SHU shot 50% from the field while holding Mayaguez to 39%.
SHU will continue play in Puerto Rico on Monday with a contest against UPR-Bayamon. Â
