Griffins Fall in Double Overtime Thriller at D&E

Seton Hill continued non conference play with their final tune-up for PSAC play as they made the long trip to Elkins, WV for a contest with Davis & Elkins on Monday evening.

Davis & Elkins outscored the Griffins 12-7 in the second overtime period for a 100-95 double overtime win over the Griffins.  Both teams are now 5-1 after the contest.

The Griffins got off to a fast start in the contest as they took an early 13-3 lead just four minutes into the contest.  SHU hit their first three three pointers to build the early lead.  James Rice, Jimmy Moon and Ryan Meis each hit three pointers in the early going.  Over the next four minute stretch, the Senators outscored the Griffins 12-4 as they cut the SHU lead to 17-15 with 12:19 to play.

Back to back baskets from Samuel Tabe allowed the Griffins to build their lead back to six at 21-15.  Davis & Elkins responded with a quick 5-0 run as they trimmed the SHU lead to 21-20 at the under ten media timeout.

The Griffins answered right back with an 11-0 run as they built their lead to 32-20 with 6:30 left in the half.  Tabe scored the final four points of the run and Meis hit a three during the run.  The Senators answered again, this time with a 12-0 run to tie the score at 32 with 3:09 to play.  Meis then scored five straight before a Senator free throw made the score 37-33 at the halftime break.

Over the first five minutes of the second half, the teams exchanged leads with neither team leading by more than four points.  Meis' layup gave SHU a 48-46 lead at the first media timeout of the half with 14:38 left in the half.  Over the next five minutes, the teams exchanged the lead four times with the score being tied at 56 midway through the half.

Back to back baskets from Michael Joiner and Drew Green put the Griffins back in front 67-64 with 6:17 to play in the contest.  Meis followed with a steal and layin to extend the SHU lead to five with just over five minutes to play.

Another steal led to a three pointer from Meis which pushed the Griffins lead to 72-66 with just under four minutes to play.  D&E responded with six straight points to tie the score at 72 with 1:56 to play.  Moon hit two free throws to put the Griffins back in front by two with 1:32 to play.

The Senators drained a three on their next possession to take a 75-74 lead with 1:12 left.  After an empty possession for the Griffins, D&E hit two free throws to push their lead to three.  Joiner hit both of his free throws to cut the Senators lead back to one with 29 seconds left.  Two more free throws from D&E were answered by a huge three pointer from Meis that tied the score at 79 with nine seconds left.

D&E took an 84-81 lead midway through the first overtime period.  With 1:15 left in overtime, Moon's jumper put SHU in front 87-86.  D&E hit two free throws to take an 88-87 lead and Green hit one of two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to tie the score at 88 and send the game to a second overtime period.

Meis scored the opening basket of overtime and Gabe Gillespie hit one of two free throws to put SHU in front 91-88 a minute into the second overtime period.  Four straight from D&E put the Senators back in front 92-91 with 2:52 left.  Joiner put SHU back in front 93-92 with two free throws.  D&E scored four straight to take a 97-93 lead.  Green hit two free throws to cut the lead to 97-95 but the Griffins then had two empty possessions which led to two more D&E free throws which put the Senators in front 99-95 with 25 seconds left.
