Seton Hill closed out the 2022 Atlantic Regional Conference Challenge with a matchup with Wheeling University on Sunday afternoon in Greensburg. The matchup featured the two teams that won their first game in the challenge.
Wheeling jumped out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and the Griffins could not overcome that deficit as the Cardinals defeated SHU by the score of 70-59. The Griffins are now 1-1 on the season.
Sakeria Haralson scored the first basket of the game for the Griffins less than a minute into the contest. Wheeling then scored the next 12 points of the contest as the Griffins trailed 12-2.
Christiane Frye ended a nearly seven minute scoring drought with a layup with 2:30 left in the quarter. A three pointer from
Helene Cowan and a basket from
Corinne Eisner trimmed the Cards lead to 20-9 but two free throws gave Wheeling a 22-9 lead after one quarter.
Wheeling was able to extend their lead to 33-12 with 6:20 to play in the first half. Four points from
Maddy Moore and two free throws from both
Emma Fischer and
Alie Seto cut the Cardinal lead to 33-20 with 3:28 left. The Cardinals took a 37-24 lead into the halftime break.
The Griffins had one last run in them. Trailing 45-26 with 5:23 to play in the third, SHU went on a 12-0 run over a four minute stretch as they cut the lead to 45-38. Seto had half of the points for the Griffins in the run.
Seton Hill would get no closer than nine points in the fourth quarter.
Seto led the Griffins with a double double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Frye was the only other Griffin in double figures with 10 points.
Courtney Tomas just missed a double double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Griffins return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Malone for a non conference matchup.
