After rallying to force a fifth set, Seton Hill trailed visiting Cal in the fifth, but the Griffins ripped off a 12-0 run to roar back for a 15-6 decision and come away with a 3-2 victory over the Vulcans.
The opening set was close, with the Griffins holding a 19-17 lead, but SHU would score six of the final eight points in the set to take a 25-19 win. The second set saw a reversal of fortunes, as Seton Hill led 20-19, but Cal scored the final six points to even the match at a set each with a 25-20 win.Â
In the third, the Vulcans pulled away in the middle of the set with an 8-1 surge and held off a late SHU charge for a 25-21 win to take a 2-1 advantage. Cal looked like they were in control of the fourth set on a couple occasions, building 13-8 and 20-16 leads before the Griffins rallied. Spurred on by two blocks and a kill from
Mackenzie English, Seton Hill tore off an 8-2 run and were serving for the set at 24-22. The Vulcans managed to score the next two points to draw even, but a service error and then a block by English and
Katie Koziarz was the final points in a 26-24 win to push the match to a deciding fifth set.
Cal would score the first three points of the set and held a 6-3 lead before a service error gave it back to the Griffins, who would not relinquish serve again. With
Riley Rock serving, Seton Hill rolled off 12 consecutive points. Koziarz had two kills and a block, while
Paige Cole had two kills and Rock served an ace in the deciding run, which lifted Seton Hill to the win to improve their record to 11-7 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC West.
Leading the attack was
Elizabeth Kolkowski, who set a season-high with 14 kills and she added three solo blocks. Cole recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 21 digs, while setting up the offense was
Abby Oesterling with 21 assists and Rock, who totaled 14 assists and three aces. In the back row,
Carrie Leazer brought up 23 digs to pace those efforts and in the front row, Koziarz led a big night of blocking with two solos and five assisted.
The Griffins will complete the two-match weekend home stand with a match against Slipper Rock on Saturday, scheduled to begin at 12 pm.
