Griffins Come up Just Short Against First Place Mercyhurst

Seton Hill hosted first place Mercyhurst as both teams began PSAC West play with the contest on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center.

The Griffins led by as many as nine points in the first half but the Lakers outscored the Griffins 47-39 in the second half in route to an 82-76 win over the Griffins.  SHU falls to 1-11 overall and 1-6 in PSAC action while the Lakers improve to 12-1 overall and 6-1 in PSAC play.

Mercyhurst hit the opening three pointer before the Griffins answered with five straight of their own on a three pointer from Sean Dillon and a layin from Jimmy Moon.  Back to back three pointers from the Lakers gave them a 15-11 advantage six minutes into the half.

Trailing 19-16, the Griffins would then go on a 14-2 run over a 3:30 stretch to take a 30-21 lead with 7:42 left in the half.  Dillon had seven of the 14 points for the Griffins during the run.  Ryan Meis drilled a three as well in the run.  Another jumper from Meis gave the Griffins a 34-25 lead with just over five minutes to play in the half.  The Lakers then closed the half on a 10-3 run to trim the Griffins lead to 37-35 at the half.

The Lakers tied the score at 37 with a quick bucket to start the half but Drew Green answered back with a three as the Griffins took a 40-37 lead.  Mercyhurst then went on a 13-0 run as they took a 50-40 lead just over three minutes into the half.

Over the next six minutes, the Griffins would cut the lead back to five points three different times but could not get any closer in the first half of the second half. Three free throws from Green and a Samuel Tabe layin cut the lead to 65-60 with 7:41 to play.  Mercyhurst then hit a three but the Griffins responded with a quick five points from Green to trim the lead to 68-65.  Two free throws from Moon cut the advantage to one at 70-69 with just over five minutes to play.  A three point play from Tabe cut the lead back to one at 73-72 with 4:02 to play.  Two layins from Moon got the Griffins back to within one, the final one at 77-76 with just over a minute to play.

The Lakers made one of two free throws but forced a Griffin turnover on their next possession and were able to put the game away from the free throw line.

Four Griffins reached double figures in the loss led by Jimmy Moon's 23 points.  Dillon finished with 16 points.  Green added 13 and Tabe finished with 11.

SHU will host Gannon on Monday evening in PSAC West play.
