The Griffins made the short trip to California, PA for a PSAC West matchup with the Vulcans on Wednesday evening looking to extend their winning streak to eleven games.
Seton Hill outscored CalU 22-6 in the second quarter but Cal responded with a 21-6 third quarter advantage as they defeated the Griffins by a 62-56 score, ending the Griffins ten game winning streak. SHU falls to 16-5 overall and 10-2 in the PSAC while CalU improves to 10-3 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC.
Cheyenne Trest opened the game with a layup and
Samantha Kosmacki drilled a three as SHU opened a quick 5-0 advantage. Cal answered with a 11-2 run ove a four minute stretch to take an 11-7 lead with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.
Katie Nolan then scored five straight and
Christiane Frye added a basket to put the Griffins in front 14-11 with 1:30 to play. Cal then closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 17-14.
The second quarter belonged to the Griffins as they outscored the Vulcans, 22-6. Five straight from Nolan put the Griffins back in front early in the quarter.
Rena Enterline then hit a three to give the Griffins a 22-17 lead with seven minutes to play.
Sonia Sarda followed with back to back three pointers as the Griffins extended their lead to 28-17 midway through the quarter. After a Vulcan bucket, Enterline responded with another three pointer.
Cheyenne Trest closed the quarter scoring the last four points as SHU took a 36-23 lead into the halftime break.
The script flipped in the third quarter as the Vulcans outscored the Griffins, 21-6. Cal opened the quarter on a 9-0 run before Nolan scored the first basket of the half for the Griffins at the 5:47 mark to put SHU in front 38-32. Enterline and Trest each hit two free throws as SHU led 42-37 with 2:48 to play. The Vulcans scored the final seven points to take a 44-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Trest and Kosmacki opened the fourth quarter with baskets to take a 46-44 lead. After six straight from Cal, Nolan scored a basket to cut the lead to 50-48 with 6:18 to play. The Vulcans extended their lead to as many as eight down the stretch before settling for the six point win.
Nolan posted another double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Both Trest and Sarda each reached double figures with 10 points. Enterline added eight points.
The Griffins return to the court on Saturday afternoon when they host Clarion at 1 PM.
