Seton Hill traveled to PSAC rival Cal Wednesday night looking for a second win a row after Monday's victory over Edinboro, but the home-standing Vulcans bested a cold-shooting Griffins squad on this night by a 79-55 count.
The game had a slow start for both offenses. After a
Sean Dillon bucket opened the scoring for the Griffins, Cal scored eight straight. That was answered by a free throw from
Samuel Tabe and a three from
Ryan Meis to bring SHU within a basket at 8-6, which is where the score stood through the first six minutes of the game. The Vulcans then took control by rolling off a 21-4 spurt over the next five minutes to build their lead to 29-10.
Although Seton Hill shot just 27 percent in the opening half, they did score the final four points of the half on two foul shots from Tabe and a lay-in just before the halftime horn by
Drew Green to trim the Cal lead to 40-23 at the break.
Seton Hill's shooting would not warm up enough in the second half to keep up with the Vulcans, who hit at a 50 percent clip from the floor after halftime. A three-point play by
Jimmy Moon early in the second half made it a 16-point deficit, but Cal responded with two quick baskets to push the lead back to 46-26. Later in the second half,
Marrek Paola knocked down a three to make it a 19-point spread, but Cal scored seven straight to take their largest lead of the night and went on the win.
A pair of Griffins notched double figures in scoring in the contest. Green was an efficient 5-of-8 from the floor on his way to a team-leading 13 points, while Dillon recorded 10 points, seven boards and a pair of steals before fouling out. Meis chipped in with seven markers and hauled down 10 boards as well to lead the efforts on the glass.
The Griffins return home on Saturday for the first of two games in a row with Clarion. Saturday's tip-off is scheduled for 3 pm in the first meeting of the year with the Eagles. The same teams will then play on Monday at Clarion in a make-up of a previously postponed game.
