Seton Hill continued PSAC West play with a road matchup at Pitt Johnstown on Saturday evening.
The Griffins scored 53 second half points and hit 17-32 three pointers but came up just short in a comeback bid in an 89-85 loss to the Mountain Cats.
Two three pointers from
Sean Dillon and a layup from
Samuel Tabe gave the Griffins an early 8-6 lead.
Jaylen Stewart hit a three and
Drew Green scored a basket as the Griffins cut the UPJ lead to 26-24 with 6:54 to play in the first half.
UPJ responded with a 7-0 run to built their lead back to nine points. The Mountain Cats were able to extend their lead to 46-32 at the halftime break.
The Pitt Johnstown lead extended to as many as 17 points in the second half. Back to back three pointers from Dillon trimmed the lead to 71-60 with 4:31 to play. A Stewart basket cut the lead to 75-66 with three minutes remaining.
Dillon and Stewart sandwiched threes around a UPJ free throw as SHU cut the lead to 77-72 with 2:20 to play. A Dillon three cut the lead to four with 1:44 to play. Another Dillon three trimmed the margin to 81-78 with 50 seconds left. UPJ was able to go six for six at the line as they closed out the win.
The Griffins finished shooting 46% from the field and were 17-32 from three point land.
Both Dillon and
Ryan Meis scored career highs for the Griffins. Dillon finished with a game high 30 points, hitting eight three pointers. Meis finished with 25 points on five three pointers.
Jaylen Stewart also reached double figures with 15 points.
Drew Green just missed a double double with eight points and 15 rebounds.
The Griffins will host Edinboro on Monday evening in another PSAC West contest.
