The Griffin men's soccer team opened PSAC West play on Wednesday afternoon in Greensburg against PSAC West preseason favorite Mercyhurst. Seton Hill led 1-0 at the half and added two more second half goals for a convincing 3-0 win over the Lakers. SHU improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the west while the Lakers drop to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the west.
The win by the Griffins ended a ten game losing streak to the Lakers and was the first Griffin win over Mercyhurst in PSAC play. SHU had last defeated Mercyhurst in 2009, a 1-0 overtime win in Greensburg.
Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the 36th minute of the contest.
Anton Dupont Linden possessed the ball near the top of the box and found
Kai Pritchard streaking down the right side of the field. Pritchard took a touch and blasted a shot past the Laker keeper into the right side of the net. SHU took that 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Mercyhurst did hold a 9-5 advantage in shots in the half.
Bobby White made four saves in the half to keep the Lakers off the scoreboard.
It did not take the Griffins long to increase their lead in the second half. Less than a minute into the half,
Elias Vangen beat his defender to the end line and sent a cross in front of the net that
Elias Mobrin got on the end of and was able to flick it over the keeper into the back of the net for a 2-0 Griffins lead. Just over twelve minutes later,
Brice Gandhi took a pass from
Archie Lock and beat a defender before beating the Laker keeper to increase the Griffins lead to 3-0.
Pritchard, Mobrin and Gandhi each scored their first goals of the season. Mobrin led the Griffins with two shots on goal. White recorded six saves for the shutout win.
The Griffins will take a break from PSAC West play as they host WV Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 PM.
