Seton Hill continued PSAC West play with a home matchup with California (PA) on Tuesday evening. The Vulcans won the first two sets and then closed out the match with a fourth set win. Both teams now have identical 6-6 overall and 1-2 records in PSAC West play.
The early portions of the first set were tight before the Griffins used a 7-1 run to take a 13-9 lead. After a kill from
Bobbi Rempe and a block from Rempe and
Mara Yahner, SHU led 18-15. Cal responded with a 5-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. After a Vulcan service error,
Kaitlyn Lipps and Rempe combined on a block and Rempe followed with an ace to give SHU a 21-20 lead. The Vulcans then won five of the next six points for a 25-22 first set win.
CalU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set. SHU answered back with a quick 4-0 run on kills from Yahner and
Mackenzie English to cut the lead to 7-6. But from that point on it was all CalU as they closed the set on a 18-5 run to take a 2-0 lead over the Griffins.
The Griffins came out of the gates quickly in the third set as they took a 5-0 lead. Lipps and
Riley Rock opened the run with kills. Rock and English combined for a block and
Abby Oesterling followed with an ace. Yahner and English combined on a block to make it 5-0. SHU continued to lead throughout the set and held a 21-13 lead late in the set. Cal fought back to tie the set at 22, 24 and 25 before a kill from
Paige Cole and then a block from Cole and
Katie Koziarz ended the set and cut the Vulcans lead to 2-1.
CalU build a 9-3 lead early in the fourth set. The Griffins then went on a 5-1 and 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. With SHU leading 19-17, the Vulcans ran off four straight to take a 21-19 lead. A kill from
Elizabeth Ward and two from Yahner kept SHU within a point late but the Vulcans closed the match with a kill for a 25-23 fourth set win.
Cole led the Griffins with nine kills and 17 digs. Yahner added seven kills. Oesterling finished with 13 assists while Rock added 12. English and Lipps each had three blocks.
Carrie Leazer added 15 digs.
SHU will continue PSAC West play on Friday evening when they travel to Slippery Rock.
