The Griffins continued PSAC West play on Friday evening with a road matchup at Slippery Rock. After dropping the first set, the Griffins responded to win the next three sets for a 3-1 win over the Rock. SHU is now 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the west while the Rock falls to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in the west.
The Rock used an early 6-0 run to take control of the first set. They led throughout the set and took an early 1-0 lead with a 25-14 first set win.
The first half of the second set was very tight and the teams were tied at 13 midway through the set. After the Rock went on a 4-0 run, the Griffins answered with a 5-0 run of their own to take an 18-17 lead. Both teams then ran off three straight points and SHU led 21-20. A kill from
Paige Cole tied the match at one after a 25-23 second set win.
Neither team was able to pull away in the early portion of the third set. The Griffins were able to build a four point lead at 20-16 with a 3-0 run. Cole had a kill during the run. The Rock responded with a 7-2 run to take a 23-22 lead but after a Rock error, a
Mara Yahner kill and a
Katie Koziarz ace, SHU led 2-1 following the 25-23 third set win.
Two 3-0 runs from the Griffins in the first half of the fourth set allowed them to take a 14-8 lead. Yahner had two kills during the run while Cole added one and
Riley Rock added an ace. SHU took the set and the match on kills from Koziarz and Yahner as they won the fourth set, 25-19.
Cole led the Griffins with a season high 18 kills. She also added 15 digs. Yahner also reached double figures with 10 kills. She added nine digs. Rock paced the offense with 25 assists.
Carrie Leazer led SHU with 20 digs.
SHU will take a break from PSAC West play with a non conference matchup at WV Wesleyan at 1 PM on Saturday.
