Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Griffins Edge Mercyhurst for 1-0 Victory

A goal just a minute into the second half would be all Seton Hill needed in their PSAC match-up with visiting Mercyhurst, as Grace Kenyon made eight saves and the Griffins came away with a 1-0 triumph over the Lakers Saturday afternoon.

Seton Hill would withstand a consistent Mercyhurst push in the opening half, as the Lakers recorded an 11-0 advantage in shots before halftime. Kenyon was challenged on four of them and stopped all four, including an attempt with less than four minutes to play in the half to keep the match scoreless headed to intermission.

It only took 63 seconds into the second half for Seton Hill to create their first shot of the match and they made it count. Leah Policarpio delivered a cross into the box and Madison Carr buried a shot to the far post for the goal, her first of the season, and SHU was on top 1-0. For the rest of the match, the Griffins relied on a strong defensive effort and Kenyon to maintain that advantage.

Just a few minutes after the goal, Mercyhurst created five chances with three shots and two corners in a four-minute span, but Kenyon made one save and another shot attempt was blocked. Later, in the 78th minute, a Laker shot was blocked and the rebound was stopped by Kenyon. Just 90 seconds later, the Griffin keeper denied another Mercyhurst attempt to keep them off the board. With time running down, the Lakers' final attempt for the equalizing goal was a header that Kenyon saved with under five minutes to play and Seton Hill would hang on for the 1-0 win that raised their record to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC.

Although Mercyhurst would post a 24-3 advantage in shots for the match, Kenyon's eight saves preserved the victory for the Griffins and was her third shutout of the season.

Seton Hill will head out on the road for their next match, as they return to Clarion on Monday. The teams started a match last Wednesday but it was stopped in the 49th minute due to lightening and unable to resume due to field conditions. Monday's match is slated for a 1 pm kickoff.
