Seton Hill began PSAC West play on Friday evening as they hosted Indiana (PA) to begin conference play. SHU battled back from dropping the first set to win sets two and three before dropping set four to send the match to five sets. SHU used a 9-0 run in the set for a 15-8 win and a thrilling five set win to open PSAC West play. SHU is now 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the west while IUP falls to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in the west.
IUP used a 6-0 run midway thru the first set to take control and win the first set by a 25-22 score.
With the score tied at 12 in the second set, SHU used a quick 4-0 run, with two aces from
Mariela Alvarado to take a 16-12 lead. The Griffins then went on a 5-0 run, the final two points coming from a
Paige Cole kill and a block from
Bobbi Rempe and Cole as they led 22-14. SHU tied the match with a 25-18 second set win.
The Griffins came out of the gates quickly in the third set as they took an early 6-1 lead. Four different Griffins had a kill and
Carrie Leazer added an ace and Rempi closed out the run with a kill. IUP battled back to tie the set at 14. The Griffins then turned it on to end the set as they scored the final nine points of the set to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-16 win.
The Crimson Hawks built an early 8-2 lead in the fourth set. The Griffins began to battle and after going on a 6-1 run trailed by just two at 15-13. After an IUP timeout, they ran off four straight to build their lead back to 19-13. SHU took a timeout and responded with a 7-0 run as they took a 20-19 lead. A kill from
Mara Yahner gave SHU a match point at 24-23 but IUP scored the final three points to even the match at two with a 26-24 win.
IUP started the fifth set with a 4-1 lead before the Griffins responded. A kill from Yahner opened the run from the Griffins. SHU then got blocks from
Riley Rock and
Kierstin Schade and then one from Schade and Cole to take a 5-4 lead. Back to back kills from Cole and Rock forced an IUP timeout at 7-4. Another kill from Schade and one from Cole pushed the SHU advantage to 10-4 and forced the Crimson Hawks to use their final timeout. IUP scored three straight but the Griffins closed out the match by scoring five of the final six points for a 15-8 win. Rock and Rempe closed out the match with kills.
Cole led the Griffins with 15 kills. Yahner added 12 and Rock finished with nine.
Abby Oesterling led the offense with 21 assists. Schade posted 12 total blocks while Rock added eight. Leazer led the Griffins with 22 digs. Oesterling added 12.
SHU will continue PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon at Gannon.
