Volleyball Opens Malone Tourney with a Pair of Wins

After an opening weekend tournament in Findlay, OH, the Griffins are spending their second weekend of the season in Canton, OH at the Malone Tournament.  The Griffins opened the tournament with a pair of matches on day one.  SHU opened the day with a matchup with Fairmont State and closed the day with a matchup with Slippery Rock.  SHU rallied from down 2-1 to defeat Fairmont State in five.  Seton Hill then closed the day out with a sweep of Slippery Rock.  The Griffins are now 2-3 on the season.  

Seton Hill trailed 17-10 in the first set before going on a 14-5 run to take a 24-22 lead in the set.  A 9-1 Griffin run keyed the comeback.  SHU used a kill from Mara Yahner and a block from Kierstin Schade and Riley Rock to win the set 26-24.  

Fairmont State then won the second and third sets by the scores of 25-19 and 25-12.  The Griffins broke open a close set with a late 4-0 run that gave them a 17-11 lead.  SHU tied the match at two with a 25-18 fourth set win.  

Trailing 4-2 in the fifth set, the Griffins ran off four straight points to take a 6-4 lead.  Seton Hill never trailed in the set again and closed the set on a 3-0 run, the final two on kills from Rock and Schade, as they won the set 15-12.  

Schade led the Griffins with 21 kills.  Mara Yahner added 11 kills.  Shannon Watkins paced the offense with 24 assists.  Abby Oesterling added 12.  Schade added six blocks.  Carrie Leazer led SHU with 23 digs.  Paige Cole added eight assists and 13 digs.  

Slippery Rock jumped out to a 12-5 lead early in the first set.  SHU responded with a 12-4 run to take a 17-16 lead in the set.  With the set tied at 22, the Griffins scored the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win.  

The Rock took an early lead 6-2 in the second set.  The Griffins then went on a 9-2 run midway through the set as they built a 17-12 lead.  SHU continued to hold the lead in the set and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 second set win.  

SHU led throughout the third set and used an 8-0 run to close out the set and match with a 25-16 third set win.

Schade led the Griffins with 13 kills.  Cole finished with 12 kills.  Watkins ran the offense with 13 assists while Rock added 12.  Bobbi Rempe and Kaitlyn Lipps each had three blocks.  Leazer led SHU with 19 digs while Cole added 12.

SHU will continue play in the Malone Tournament on Saturday when they take on host Malone and Saginaw Valley.
