Seton Hill and Mercyhurst met for the fourth straight time in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Final, this year's was played in Erie on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers scored the first four goals of the contest and never led by less than three goals after that as they defeated the Griffins by the score of 11-7 to claim their second straight G-MAC championship. SHU is now 11-2 on the season while the Lakers improve to 12-1 overall.
The first quarter was all Mercyhurst as the Lakers scored early and late as they took a 4-0 lead over the Griffins. Mercyhurst scored less than a minute into the contest then scored three goals over the final four minutes of the quarter to build the 4-0 lead over the Griffins. The Lakers held an 18-9 lead in shots in the quarter and won all five faceoffs in the quarter.
Seton Hill got on the scoreboard just over five minutes into the second quarter as
Ryan Manbeck scored an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later the Lakers pushed their lead back to four at 5-1. Thirty seconds later
Jeremy Sforzo scored a man up goal to cut the lead to 5-2. After another Laker goal, Griffin keeper
Kevin Mo scored from midfield into an empty net for his first collegiate goal to cut the lead to 6-3 with 6:41 to play before the half. The Lakers scored the final goal of the half to take a 7-3 lead into the break. The Lakers held a 28-22 advantage in shots and won 10 of 12 faceoffs in the half.
Back to back goals, thirty seconds apart from
Thomas Hanulak trimmed the Laker lead to 8-5 with 9:13 left in the quarter.
Peyton Gensler scored with 2:13 to play in the quarter as SHU cut the lead to 9-6 but the Lakers scored two back breaking goals to close the quarter, the last with just two seconds to play, as they led 11-6 after three quarters.
Manbeck scored the final goal of the game with just under four minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
Mercyhurst held a 47-37 advantage in shots in the contest. They also won 17 of the 22 faceoffs in the contest.
Manbeck and Hanulak each scored twice in the contest. Manbeck added an assist. Mo finished with 13 saves in cage.
SHU will now wait for the NCAA Selection show on Sunday evening at 7:30 PM to see if their season will continue into the NCAA postseason. SHU was #1 in last week's regional poll. The top five teams in the region make the NCAA Playoffs.
