The Griffin baseball team closed out their regular season with a home PSAC West doubleheader with Pitt Johnstown on Saturday afternoon. The team also honored 17 senior members of its program between games of the doubleheader.
Seton Hill ran its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of the Mountain Cats. SHU hit back to back home runs twice in a 11-1 game one win. The Griffins then used a five run third inning in route to a 10-3 win in game two. SHU improves to 31-4 overall and 23-4 in PSAC West play.
The first of the back to back homers occurred in the first inning as
Tommy Pellis and
Derek Orndorff went back to back to give the Griffins an early 2-0 lead.
Isaiah DiAndreth and
Vincenzo Rauso drew walks to put runners on first and second.
Tanner Froehlich followed with an RBI double off the top of the wall in left center and
Tyler Peterson added an RBI ground out to give the Griffins a 4-0 lead.
The second of the back to back homers started the bottom of the second inning.
Canice Ejoh and
Owen Sabol went back to back to extend the Griffin lead to 6-0. Pellis was hit by a pitch and Orndorff walked to put runners on first and second. DiAndreth and Rauso each knocked in a run and the ninth run of the game scored on an error.
The Griffins added unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings to close out the scoring for SHU.
Aidan Layton earned the win on the mound with two scoreless innings. He struck out four in the win. Six Griffins pitchers combined on the four hitter. Sabol had two hits for the Griffins.
Sabol drew a walk to lead off the first inning and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. The Mountain Cats tied the game at one in the top of the second inning.
Seton Hill retook the lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Jack Oberdorf walked and with one out Peterson singled. Ejoh was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sabol drew a walk to force in a run. Pellis followed with an RBI single to give SHU a 3-1 lead.
The Griffins then struck for five runs in the third inning. DiAndreth walked and Fiedor singled to put runners on second and third. Oberforf followed with a RBI ground out to second. Froehlich was hit by a pitch and then Peterson executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Fiedor and put SHU in front 5-2. Ejoh, Sabol and Pellis also added RBis in the inning. Orndorff and Fiedor drove in the final two runs of the game in the sixth inning.
Jon McCullough picked up his third win of the season. He worked four innings and struck out nine. Pellis finished with three hits and Orndorff added two.
The Griffins will begin the PSAC playoffs on Wednesday afternoon at noon when they play the fourth seed from the west in a single nine inning elimination game.
