Coach Marizzaldi Wins #600 as Griffins Sweep UPJ

Seton Hill is closing out their regular season with a four game PSAC West set with Pitt Johnstown.  The two teams opened the four game set with a doubleheader in Johnstown on Friday evening.

The Griffins scored 13 times in the seventh inning as they broke open a close game for a 17-1 win in game one.  The team then used two home runs from Tommy Pellis, the last one a game winner in the top of the ninth inning, for a 4-3 win in game two to complete the sweep.  SHU is now 29-4 overall and 21-4 in the west.

With the doubleheader sweep, head coach Marc Marizzaldi earned his 600th career victory.  It was also the 600th win in the history of the Seton Hill baseball program.

The Griffins took an early lead off of UPJ ace Dylan Heid when they scored in the second inning.  With one out, Vincenzo Rauso walked.  He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by Jordan Fiedor.

Fiedor homered into the bleachers in right center field to lead off the fifth inning and give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.  SHU scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Owen Sabol walked to lead off the inning and scored when Tommy Pellis cleared the bleachers in right field to put the Griffins ahead 4-0.

SHU broke the game open in the seventh inning when their first 14 hitters reached base.  The Griffins scored 13 times in the inning.  Rauso, Isaiah DiAndreth, Brandon Kline and Tyler Peterson each knocked in two runners in the inning.  Pellis, Derek Orndorff, Tanner Froehlich, Owen Sabol and Neal McDermott each knocked in a run.

Ben Vicini improved to 4-1 in the win.  He worked six innings, giving up 0 earned runs on two hits.  Ben struck out nine in the win.  Dylan Bonzo struck out three in the seventh inning.

Game two was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.  Froehlich singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Jack Oberdorf walked and both runners moved up on a fly out.  Froehlich scored on an RBI ground out from Sabol and Oberdorf later scored on a wild pitch to give the Grififns a 2-0 lead.

UPJ scored an unearned run to cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Pellis homered over the left center field wall to add an insurance run and give the Griffins a 3-1 lead in the seventh.  The Mountain Cats scored two more unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at three.

The game remained tied at three until Pellis hit his third homer of the game in the ninth, this one clearing the huge wall in left field.  UPJ put runners at second and third with one out but Peyton Reesman was able to strike out the final two hitters to close the game out.

Reesman earned the win in relief.  He threw two scoreless innings.  He did not give up a hit and struck out four.  Pellis finished game two with two hits.

The two teams will close out the four game set with a doubleheader in Greensburg on Saturday afternoon.  First pitch is set for 1:30 PM.
