The Griffin baseball team looked to rebound after dropping a pair of games on the road at California (PA) on Friday as they hosted the Vulcans for a PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The team was able to rebound by sweeping the Vulcans in dramatic fashion with a three run walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth to win game two. The Griffins opened the sweep with an 8-2 win in game one. SHU is now 25-4 overall and 17-4 in the west while the Vulcans drop to 22-14 overall and 13-11 in the west.
SHU did not waste any time getting on the board in game one.
Tommy Pellis singled with one out and
Derek Orndorff walked. Both stole a bag and scored on a two out, two RBI single from
Owen Sabol. Sabol moved to second on a failed pickoff and then scored on a
Jack Oberdorf single as SHU took a 3-0 lead. They added two more runs in the second inning.
Vincenzo Rauso walked with two outs and scored when Pellis homered over the left center field wall to give SHU a 5-0 lead.
Seton Hill scored three more times in the bottom of the third inning.
Isaiah DiAndreth and Sabol singled while Oberdorf walked to load the bases with no one out. After a fielders choice, the Vulcans balked a run in.
Jamie Wrabel then doubled down the right field line to give the Griffins an 8-1 advantage.
Peyton Reesman worked 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the game one win. He allowed just two hits and struck out seven. Pellis and Sabol each had two hits.
California jumped on the Griffins in game two, scoring three times in the top of the first inning.
The Griffins got one run back with a leadoff homer from Orndorff in the third inning. Seton Hill tied the game at three in the fifth inning. DiAndreth doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an Oberdorf single. After a Fiedor sacrifice bunt,
Tyler Peterson doubled down the left field line to score Oberdorf and tie the game at three.
SHU took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning. DiAndreth came through with a key hit on a 3-2 pitch with two outs that scored Sabol, who led off the inning with a single, and gave the Griffins a 4-3 lead.
The Vulcans would not say die as they tied the game in the seventh with a single on a 1-2 pitch with two outs.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Brandon Kline was hit by a pitch with one out. Sabol followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out. Following a strikeout, Orndorff hammered a 2-2 pitch over the left center field wall for a walk off three run homer to give the Griffins a 7-4 win.
Nash Bryan earned the win in relief. He worked the final 2 1/3 innings. Nash gave up one hit and struck out five. DiAndreth had three hits to lead the Griffins. Orndorff and Peterson each added two hits.
SHU returns to action on Tuesday afternoon at Slippery Rock for a make up PSAC West Doubleheader.
