After splitting their doubleheader on Friday in Erie, the Griffins looked to win a series from Mercyhurst as they hosted the Lakers in a PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins were able to win the series by earning the sweep of the Lakers on Saturday. SHU rallied from 4-2 down in game one for a 6-4 win. They completed the sweep with a 5-4 win in game two. SHU improves to 20-2 on the season and 12-2 in the west while the Lakers drop to 20-12 overall and 11-9 in the west.
Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the second inning of game one. SHU responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Jack Oberdorf and
Tyler Peterson each walked and both moved up with a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with an out.
Vincenzo Rauso hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game and
Jamie Wrabel doubled to right center field to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers answered right back with a three run homer in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. SHU scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead over the Griffins.
Brandon Kline homered to lead off the inning and change the momentum over to the Griffins.
Jordan Fiedor then singled and stole second, forcing a Laker pitching change.
Tommy Pellis greeted the new pitcher with an RBI double that tied the score at four. Later in the inning, Pellis scored on an RBI groundout from
Isaiah DiAndreth as SHU took a 5-4 lead.
SHU added an insurance run when they scored an unearned run after Pellis reached on a fielders choice.
Nash Bryan got two strikeouts and a popup to earn the save in the seventh. Payton Reesman earned the win in relief.
Wrabel and Pellis each had two hits in the win.
SHU jumped in front in game two in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Rauso singled and Kline was hit by a pitch. Wrabel followed with an RBI single to give SHU a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins increased their lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Pellis singled to lead off the inning. Later Oberdorf walked and Pellis scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. DiAndreth followed with a two run bomb to left center field that put SHU in front 4-0.
Mercyhurst got one run back in the top of the fourth but a DiAndreth sacrifice fly pushed the lead back to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth. The Lakers trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning.
Mercyhurst got the tying run to third base in the seventh inning but
Marshall McGraw got a groundout to end the game.
Jon McCullough improved to 2-0 with the win. He struck out ten in 5 2/3 innings. McGraw earned the save. Pellis added two hits.
SHU returns to play on Tuesday afternoon when they host Slippery Rock.
