Softball Sweeps Mercyhurst

The Griffins returned home for a PSAC West doubleheader with Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon in Greensburg.

SHU scored two times in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 4-2 win in game one.  Seton Hill completed the sweep with a 4-0 win in game two.  SHU is now 20-8 overall and 17-5 in the PSAC West.

Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of game one.  Logan Hartman led off the inning with a single.  After an out, Jenna Osikowicz singled and with two outs Morgan Toal walked to load the bases.  Pinch runner Alexis Bonatch scored on a wild pitch to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

Back to back homers to lead off the top of the fourth inning gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead.

SHU tied the score at two in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Nichole McClendon doubled to lead off the inning.  She moved to third on an Osikowicz sacrifice bunt.  Lauren Dellett followed with an RBI single to tie the score at two.

In the sixth, Christiana Skrabak walked and Allison Kapoll reached on a bunt base hit to put runners on first and third with no one out.  Kapoll stole second and both runners scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Bertig to give SHU a 4-2 lead.

The Lakers scored one in the seventh but a fielders choice ended the contest.

McClendon finished with two hits including a double.  Bertig earned the win in relief with four innings of work.  She gave up a run on four hits.

Game two remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.  SHU starter Lauren Dellett held the Lakers hitless through the first three innings.

In the fifth, Samantha Estupinian singled to lead off the inning.  Shayleigh Gulvas reached on an error on a bunt to put runners on first and third with no outs.  McClendon reached on a fielders choice when pinch runner Natalia Greco beat the throw to the plate.  With two outs, Toal walked to load the bases and then Alexis Vargas delivered a key hit as she cleared the bases with a double to the left center field gap that gave SHU a 4-0 lead.

Dellett earned her ninth win of the season with a complete game shutout.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.  Vargas and Estupinian each had two hits in the win.

SHU and Mercyhurst will complete their four game set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 AM.
