Seton Hill and Mercyhurst continued their rivalry on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader in Erie.
The Lakers rallied from 5-1 down and scored three in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Griffins by a 7-6 score in game one. SHU responded and ralled from 2-1 down for a 4-2 win in game two. SHU is now 18-2 overall and 10-2 in the west while the Lakers are 20-10 overall and 11-7 in the west.
The Griffins loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the first inning on two walks and a hit batter. SHU used a
Jack Oberdorf sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead.
SHU scored three more times in the top of the third inning to push their lead to 4-0.
Tommy Pellis led off the inning with a homer. After an out,
Derek Orndorff tripled and scored when
Isaiah DiAndreth homered down the left field line. The Lakers used a walk and a double to trim the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third.
Brandon Kline homered to lead off the fourth inning and give the Griffins a 5-1 lead. Four straight singles from the Lakers to lead off the bottom of the fourth led to three runs and cut the SHU lead to 5-4.
The Griffins added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when
Jordan Fiedor singled to knock in
Owen Sabol.
In the seventh inning, the Lakers used a two base error and a walk to put two runners on with one out. They then hit a 1-2 pitch that cleared the wall near the left field foul pole for a 7-6 walk off win over the Griffins.
Pellis, DiAndreth and Kline each homered in the game one loss.
Seton Hill got on the scoreboard first in game two in the top of the third inning. With an out, Kline walked and stole second. He scored on a Pellis RBI single. Mercyhurst retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs.
SHU retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Fiedor singled and scored when Pellis cleared the left center field wall to put the Griffins in front 3-2. Fiedor was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch to give SHU a 4-2 lead in the seventh.
The Lakers put two runners on in the seventh with no one out but
Nash Bryan got two pop outs and a strikeout to end the inning.
Kevin Vaupel worked 6+ innings to earn the win in game two. Bryan got the final three outs to earn the save. Pellis finished with three hits and three RBI including a two run homer. Oberdorf and Rauso each added two hits.
The teams will close out their four game set on Saturday afternoon in Greensburg with a 1 PM doubleheader.
