After three weeks off, the Griffin softball team returned to the playing field with a home PSAC West doubleheader against Gannon.
Gannon took game one over the Griffins by a 6-0 score before the Griffins rallied for a 4-0 win in game two to earn the split. SHU is now 16-6 overall and 13-3 in the west while Gannon is 16-10 overall and 15-7 in the west.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins with a solo homer in the top of the second. They added to their lead in the third with a two run double. Gannon added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-0 lead.
Christiana Skrabak and
Jenna Osikowicz each singled in the loss.
Game two was a pitchers dual between the Griffins
Lauren Dellett and the Knights Kennedy DeMatteis. Both pitchers put up zeroes over the first five innings of action. Dellett only allowed one baserunner through the first five innings on a strikeout and a passed ball. The only base runner the Griffins had through five innings was a double from
Nichole McClendon.
The Griffins were finally able to break through in the bottom of the sixth inning. After one out,
Natalia Greco reached on a bunt base hit. McClendon was hit by a pitch and Osikowicz reached on an infield single to load the bases. With two outs,
Morgan Toal stepped to the plate and hammered a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for a game winning grand slam.
Dellett had the no hitter going into the seventh inning and got the first out before a double ended the no hit bid.
Dellett earned her seventh win of the season with the complete game one hitter. She finished with five strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Five different Griffins each had one hit in the win.
SHU will continue their PSAC West series with Gannon on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader in Erie at 4 PM.
