Softball Sweeps a Pair from Wheeling

The Griffin softball team returned to the diamond after an eight day break with a road doubleheader against Wheeling.  The team got two great starts from two freshmen and were able to sweep a pair of contests from the Cardinals.

Freshman hurler Lauren Dellett went 6 2/3 no hit innings in a 5-0 game one win and fellow freshman Logan Hartman worked four scoreless innings in a 12-0, five inning win.  Another freshman, Nina Grandey went 6-7 in the doubleheader with four runs scored, three RBI and a double.  SHU is now 3-1 on the season.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first three innings of game one.  SHU got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning.  Morgan Toal led off the inning drawing a walk.  With two outs, Grandey doubled to center field to knock in Toal and give SHU a 1-0 lead.  SHU added another run in the fifth inning with two out back to back doubles from Jenna Osikowicz and Alexis Vargas to take a 2-0 lead.

SHU pushed across two runs in the sixth inning.  With one out, Christiana Skrabak homered.  Grandey followed with a single and scored on a Dellett double to make it 4-0.  Nichole McClendon added an RBI single in the seventh inning to increase the lead to five.

Dellett no hit the Cardinals through six innings and got a ground out and strikeout to start the seventh inning before a single up the middle broke up the no hit bid.

Dellett improved to 2-0 on the season with the complete game, one hit, shutout.  She struck out 10 and walked just two in the win.  Osikowicz and Grandey each had three hits in the win.

Seton Hill jumped on the scoreboard first in game two as well.  Grandey reached on error and advanced to second to lead off the inning.  Skrabak followed with a single to center to give SHU a 1-0 lead.  SHU pushed their lead to 4-0 in the third inning.  Vargas led off the inning with a single and scored on a Grandey base hit.  Dellett later knocked in two runs to push the lead to 4-0.

The Griffins added another run in the fifth inning when Osikowicz drove in Samantha Estupinian who doubled with one out.  SHU put the game away with a seven spot in the fifth inning.  Skrabak and Toal each drove in two runs in the inning while Allison Kapoll, McClendon and Grandey each added one RBI.

Logan Hartman earned her first collegiate win in the circle with four shutout innings.  She struck out five in the win.   Grandey paced the offense with three hits.  Osikowicz, Vargas, Toal, Skrabak and Dellett each added two hits.

SHU will open PSAC West play on Wednesday afternoon when they host Slippery Rock at 1 PM.
