Seton Hill opened their 2021 season with a home doubleheader with Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins used a five run second inning in game one then used a big swing from
Tommy Pellis and the arm of
Ben Vicini in game two to sweep the doubleheader. SHU took game one by a 7-3 score and completed the sweep with a 1-0 win in game two.
SHU opened the scoring in game one with a five spot in the second inning.
Derek Orndorff opened the inning with a single and stole second. He scored on a
Jack Oberdorf single to give SHU their first run of the game. Oberdorf later scored on a
Jamie Wrabel RBI single.
Brandon Kline added an RBI double as the Griffins took a 5-0 lead.
The Griffins added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tanner Froehlich homered with one out and
Isaiah DiAndreth added an RBI single to knock in Oberdorf to increase the SHU lead to 7-3.
Shippensburg scored three times in the top of the seventh inning before
Nash Bryan got a pop out and strikeout to end the contest.
Jared Kollar earned the win with four shutout innings. He gave up three hits while striking out seven.
In game two, Pellis homered on a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the first inning for the lone run of the contest.
Griffin starter
Ben Vicini was perfect through three innings before giving up a leadoff single in the top of the fourth inning. That runner advanced to second base after a groundout but he was the only Raider to reach second base in the contest.
Vicini scattered two hits in the complete game shutout. He struck out five and walked none while throwing just 79 pitches.
Vincenzo Rauso also doubled in the win.
SHU will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 PM when they host Glenville State in a single nine inning contest.
