Baseball Sweeps IUP to Open PSAC West Play

After starting the season with an 8-0 record in non conference play, the Griffins finally opened PSAC West play on Friday afternoon as they hosted Indiana (PA) in a doubleheader.

Seton Hill used two big innings for a 12-0 win in game one and then scored four times in the fourth inning of game two in route to a 5-1 win over the Crimson Hawks to complete the sweep.  The Griffins improve to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in PSAC West play.

The Griffins jumped on IUP in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs while seeing just six pitches to open the inning.  Jordan Fiedor doubled down the left field line on the first pitch of the inning.  Two pitches later, Tommy Pellis tripled over the center fielder's head to knock in Fiedor and give SHU a 1-0 lead.  Derek Orndorff then hammered the first pitch he saw and cleared the left center field wall to put the Griffins in front 3-0.  Two pitches later, Jack Oberdorf made it back to back jacks as he cleared the left center field wall and gave SHU a 4-0 lead.

SHU put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Pellis singled to lead off the inning and Orndorff followed with his second long ball of the game as SHU took a 6-0 lead.  Oberdorf reached on an error and Vincenzo Rauso and Jamie Wrabel singled to load the bases with one out.  Tanner Froehlich singled to drive in two runs forcing an IUP pitching change.  After a strikeout, Jordan Fiedor singled in two runs and Tommy Pellis followed with another two run jack as the Griffins built a 12-0 lead.

That was all starter Ben Vicini needed as he went six innings to earn the win.  He gave up four hits and struck out eight while walking none.  Andino Vecchiolla pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Pellis finished 3-3 with three RBI.  Orndorff added two hits and four RBI while Fiedor finished with two hits and two RBI.

Game two was scoreless until the Griffins broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Pellis walked to lead off the inning.  Orndorff and Oberdorf then followed with RBI doubles to give SHU a 2-0 lead.  Tyler Peterson drew a walk and both Peterson and Oberdorf scored on Froehlich's two RBI double.

Seton Hill added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  After one out, Peterson doubled and scored on a Froehlich single.

Marshall McGraw made his first start of the season and worked 3 2/3 of scoreless baseball.  He gave up three hits and struck out three.  Aidan Layton picked up the win in relief.  Froehlich was the lone Griffin with two hits in game two.

The Griffins will conclude the four game set with IUP with a doubleheader in Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
