Softball Drops a Pair at Home to Walsh

The Griffins took a break from PSAC West action when they hosted Walsh in a non conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Walsh used a four run fifth inning in game one for a 5-2 win and swept the Griffins after scoring three in the sixth inning of game two by a 6-4 score.  SHU falls to 7-3 overall while the Cavaliers improve to 9-5 on the season.

Game one was a pitchers dual over the first four innings between the Griffins Lauren Dellett and the Cavs Sara Gockenbach.  Both pitchers put up zeroes in their first four innings of work.  Four of the first five Cavaliers reached base in the fifth inning as they used three singles and a homer to take a 4-0 lead.

Seton Hill cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth inning.  After two outs, Alexis Vargas tripled to left center field.  She scored on a Morgan Toal double.  Nichole McClendon followed with a single to cut the lead to 4-2.  Walsh picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 5-2 win.

Toal and Dellett doubled in the loss while Vargas added a triple.

Walsh scored single runs in each of their first three at bats to take a 3-0 lead over the Griffins.  Starter Lauren Bertig helped herself at the plate in the third inning as she hit the first pitch she saw over the left center field wall to cut the Cavalier lead to 3-1.

SHU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Jenna Osikowicz led off the inning with a triple.  After a groundout, she scored when Toal singled.  Christiana Skrabak was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Pinch hitter Allison Kapoll then singled up the middle to score Toal and tie the game at three.

Walsh scored three times in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.

Toal led the Griffins with 2 hits in game two.

The Griffins return to PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to UPJ for a 1 PM doubleheader.
